It's not a "take that" game in any way, but rather a thoughtful abstract game that scales its depth to match the players' skill levels. This game plays fantastically and looks amazing on the table. I recommend Lanterns for families and more serious game groups alike. Great stuff, this!. In Lanterns Dice: Lights in the Sky, players act as artisans, decorating the palace lake with floating lanterns and launching fireworks to light up the sky. The player who earns the most honor has made the best impression on the emperor and wins. In more detail, roll dice and choose which colored lanterns players can fill on their scoresheets. The original Lanterns game was pretty good. Short. Sweet. This is a Roll and Write and I really like the mechanisms in it. First of all, you really need a sharpie as opposed to a pencil or pen. Things are going to get messy! Second, you should have something firm to write on because you are going to be doing a lot of coloring in. The Purge: # Lanterns: The Harvest Festival: The tile laying game of william (2, reviews) · 4 months ago · English 2 0. Lanterns is a marvelous game. It’s beautiful, with fantastic illustrations, bright colors, and sturdy, well-made components; but Lanterns isn’t just a pretty face.
You select a lake tile from your hand and place it next to a tile on the table. If you match any colors to a tile already played, you get that color lantern card.
If you play a tile card with a platform and match a color or match a color to a platform, you get that color lantern card and a favor token.
Since there are limited lantern cards in a game, it is possible to not get certain colors if players deplete a pile. The game ends after the last lake tile is drawn and placed.
Where you want to be the first to make dedications, but not make all the same dedications due to the points going down. What do I think of this game?
The components are well done. I like how the tiles and tokens feel. The cards are a little smaller than the standard sized card.
I like how gaining lantern cards work. I could turn this tile this way and match two cards, but my opponent will gain the color they need to make a dedication on their turn.
Each step has some thought that goes into it and some tough decisions. From exchanging a lantern card to deciding what dedication to take makes this game a great game in my opinion.
Lanterns was a quick pick up for our friend Eric at GenCon The game is pleasant to the eye and easy to learn, which makes it good for families and beginner gamers.
The set collection element makes it good for experienced gamers as well. I personally like that there are different set collection paths, so there are different ways to earn points.
Ethan and I played with four players the first time we played and over the next few plays, finally playing with just the two of us.
There was much more of a puzzle feeling with more players, which made it a bit more strategic in my opinion.
This is definitely a pick up if you have family who would like to expand their gaming knowledge or a game for people of many ages.
Lanterns is a good family-weight game, and I think it could be used as a good introduction to the set collecting genre. Quick set up, pretty game pieces with underlying complexity.

I like taking a picture of it before putting the game away. Pretty much everyone that has played it has enjoyed it. Personally, I think it is well worth the money.
Buy it, and enjoy it with your friends and family. One person found this helpful. You place tiles and get cards if Lanterns plays sort of like dominoes.
You place tiles and get cards if you match colors and get bonus cards for the color that points to you downwards.
There is a good amount of strategy as you get points for getting one of each color, 3 two of a kinds or 1 set of four of a kind.
Once a color card runs out, you can place tiles to prevent others from getting a free card. I'm doing a terrible job of explaining this game, so I would recommend checking out Board Game Geek or your favorite YouTube video of how its played.
Very chill vibe. Game doesn't last too long with 2 players. Can't wait to play with more people as I see how it could get a little more competitive.
Great for couples looking for a light game. Lanterns is a beautiful, light tile layer that my wife really enjoys good thing, I bought it specially for her!
The strategy is not brain-burning at all, but the set collection makes for a fun competition as you try to grab the honor tokens for more points.
In two players it's a bit deterministic and if you can stay ahead of the other player you will always be grabbing the more valuable tokens.
Still enjoyable: a nice mix of Tokaido and Carcassonne two of our favorite gateways. I'd be interested to play with four players, and especially three, as I feel the increased competition for tiles makes for a much stronger game.
Recommended, looking forward to more plays. So, easy to learn and some good depth. My 11 year old loves strategy games and didn't want to play this because it seemed too easy or too light.
To be clear this is not a deep strategy game, but it has enough that my year-old really like it and asks to play it. My wife says: a chill game that has a bit of competition to it.
On a random turn you collect one card Cards are used to make sets. Sets award points like in rummy and your competitors do as well.
Where the strategy is that with planning and a bit of luck you can have turns where you collect 2, 3, 4, and in rare cases 5 cards while your competitors just collect the one.
That's the fun. In Lanterns players take turns playing lake tiles to the middle of the table the lake and collecting lanterns cards based on the resulting patterns.
You can dedicate 4 of a single color card, 4 pairs of any color cards, or 1 of each color. Each of those options has a stack of associated tiles with values in descending order.
The sooner you can claim the most valuable tiles, the better for your final score. As an additional challenge some of the dedication tokens have dots in the lower corner indicating that they should be removed based on the number of players in the game.
Players also have the option of trading in 2 favor tokens and a card of any color , for a card of a selected color. This must be done before any other part of your turn and gives you the ability to collect that one missing card from a set.
Gameplay continues around the table in this fashion until the last lake tile is collected, at which time each player will receive a final turn.
Points from dedication tokens are tallied and the player with the highest number of points wins the game. Ties are resolved by the player with the highest number of favor tokens.
And in this case, the board is a lake with colorful lanterns all over. To begin, players set the starting Lake tile the one with the image of a boat in the center in the center of the table so that each edge is oriented toward one of the players.
The Dedication scoring tiles are also placed to the side in stack by color in descending order with the highest value tile on top. Each player draws 3 Lake tiles to their hand and the rest of the Lake tiles are placed in a face down stack to the side.
The number of Lake tiles used in a game also depends on the number of players. Each player also collects a lantern tile corresponding to the color on the starting Lake tile facing their direction to begin the game.
Each stack of Dedication tiles specifies the type of set needed to claim a tile.
